Safety and PPE.
Metalwork involves sharp edges, heat, sparks, noise, fumes and moving equipment. Arrive dressed for the workshop and follow the instruction for the specific task.

Steel toe-cap boots
Wear well-fitting steel toe-cap boots throughout the workshop session.
Well-fitting work gloves
Bring gloves that fit correctly and are suitable for the task. Follow the glove requirements demonstrated for each piece of equipment.
At the workshop
PPE provided in the workshop
The workshop provides safety glasses, goggles and face shields; hearing protection; welding helmets and welding gloves; and respiratory protection appropriate to the activity.
The technician will identify the PPE required for each task, including when gloves must be removed to prevent entanglement with rotating equipment.
Wear gloves when handling material and sharp edges. Remove them before operating the pillar drill, cold saw or chop saw, angle grinder, or other pneumatic or electric equipment with rotating or moving parts, as demonstrated in training.
Final check
Ready to work?
- Tie back long hair and remove jewellery and scarves.
- Keep loose clothing, bags and jackets outside the work area.
- Wear full-length trousers and sleeves. Shorts and short sleeves are not permitted; avoid meltable synthetic clothing around heat.
- Do not bring food or drink into the work area.
- Do not enter after consuming alcohol or taking medication that causes drowsiness or affects your ability to work safely.
- Keep phones and laptops put away. Use a device only for an emergency call, a timer or a single project photo, away from operating equipment.
- Visitors require technician approval before entering the work area.
- Ask about any PPE or safety concern before starting.
Higher-risk activity
Another person must be present
When using powered or pneumatic equipment, angle grinders, welding equipment or resistance-welding equipment, at least one other person must be present in the workshop and able to assist in an emergency.
A buddy is not normally required for hand tools and Green equipment unless the trained procedure or technician identifies an additional risk. Never work alone with Yellow or Purple equipment.
Use extraction, screens, task-specific eye protection and fire controls exactly as demonstrated during training.
